Marma chikits is the precise art of touching an individual inexactly the right place at a critical moment in time, for thepurpose of healing. Marmni serve as points of access to the bodysinnate intelligence, opening the doorway to health and well-being.They are vehicles to reach the ultimate goal of yurveda: perfecthealth, firmly rooted in a vibrantly alive body and fully awakenedmind. In this chapter, we discuss the rich and significantspiritual dimensions of marmni. Because marmni are intimatelyconnected to thoughts, perceptions and emotions as well as to theentire fabric of the physical body, marma chikits can be a powerfulally on the spiritual path, helping to settle the mind and enhanceawareness in such practices as meditation, prnyma (breath control)and yogsana, and to free the mind and body of the accumulatedstresses and toxins that limit consciousness and burden theheart.

touch can engender radical change in the neurochemistry. Thehuman body is a unique chemical laboratory; a touch through theenergy points of marmani can open new pathways that affect ourinner pharmacy. Certain marma therapies can not only enhancethinking, feeling, and perception, they also have the potential toevoke a state of choiceless, passive awareness and transform itinto a transcendental state of samdhi. Thus, the total healing ofbody, mind and spirit can happen through marma chikits.

the capacity to perceive clearly, concentrate and meditate. These mental functions operate based on three subdoshas: tarpakakapha is responsible for memory, sdhaka pitta for cognition andprna vyu for sensory perception. Deeper examination of the mindreveals its presence at the marma sites. Each energy point isrelated to manas, the sensory mind, and directly communicatesperception, thought and emotion. Every marma is also related tobuddhi, via cognition, retention and memory, because marmni aredoorways to the nervous system and related mental faculties. Thesubconscious memories mentioned above in our discussion of groundmind and particular mind are stored in the deep connective tissueof majj dhtu. These memories can be directly accessed bystimulating the marmni, as they are a part of majj dhtu. Marmni areintrinsically connected to the mind via the media of majj dhtu andmano vaha srotas. There is a dynamic interplay between the mind andthe energy points, and understanding this relationship is essentialfor healing. In a healthy system, marmni are sites of vitalitywhere consciousness flourishes and flowers. Pure awareness flowsgracefully through the doorways of marmni and, as all riversfinally merge into the ocean, all pranic energy that coursesthrough the marmni finally merges in the ocean of awareness. However, when the mind becomes stagnant or clogged, the flow ofprna is similarly obstructed, like a river that is stagnant orpolluted, and the marmni mirror this. Blockage at a marma is theobstructed flow of awareness. If the mind is overactive, the marmnireflect this too, becoming painful, sensitive or tender. Likewise, disturbance at the level of a marma is reflected in themindrevealing the inherent mind/body connection. This is why, forrapid spiritual evolution, a comprehensive mindbody program is sohelpful;2 a program that integrates meditation and breathing withpurification procedures for the body and nervous system.

CommentaryTwo principal marma points influence the shoulder. Oneis rdhva Skandha on the upper aspect of the trapezius muscle, andthe other is Adhah Skandha on the lateral aspect of the shoulder. They can be used in conjunction with each other to relievedisturbance of the shoulder joint. The marma on the rightcorresponds to the liver and on the left to the spleen. Skandha maybe poetically translated as shouldering responsibility. rdhvaSkandha is located at a part of the body associated with support. The Grv marmni located on the back of the neck are also linked withresponsibility. Many individuals in modern society carry the weightof the world on their shoulders. As a result, they develop pain andstiffness in the neck, shoulders and upper back; commonly, thenecks range of motion also becomes limited. Pain may radiate to theoccipital region of the head. Indeed, stress is one of the mostcommon causes of occipital or tension headaches. Tension accruingin these areas also leads to mental fatigue and insomnia.Stimulating rdhva Skandha relieves these conditions and facilitatesthe flow of prna to the lungs and upper chest. Hence, treatmenthere benefits many lung conditions and may relieve hiccups, adisturbance of udna vyu, the upward moving energy. Pressure onrdhva Skandha stimulates the downward flow of energy. 2ff7e9595c
